About John

Specialist in international commercial and corporate law covering many jurisdictions, an admitted conveyancer and real estate professional, and with 31 years of wills, trust services and administration of deceased estates experience is a specialist in this field too.

John is an experienced legal practitioner with over 25 years’ experience in private legal practice in Durban, South Africa and Dubai, United Arab Emirates, with an emphasis on commercial and corporate matters, real estate and conveyancing, M&A, wills and also indirect taxes. Prior to entering into legal practice, John served 6 years in the Wills, Trusts and Deceased Estate Department in a South African bank, fast becoming the Head of Department: Wills and Trust Services with the responsibility of managing the bank’s regional estate department for a number of years. John entered the legal profession with a prominent legal firm in 1993 and was appointed as a director (partner) shortly thereafter. In 1999, John founded and became the Managing Director of a legal practice, under the name and style of Peacock Incorporated, later changed to Peacock Liebenberg & Dickinson Incorporated (PLD). As managing partner, John practiced and managed the law practice from 1999 till his departure to Dubai in January 2014. In addition to managing the legal practice, John as an admitted conveyancer ran the real estate practice for the firm. During his tenure, John was involved in countless commercial matters and also commercial and residential developments and negotiations, with a hands-on and pragmatic approach which saw John representing numerous corporate clients, developers and commercial banks with their real estate matters.

John joined Bin Shabib & Associates (BSA) LLP, later rebranded as BSA Ahmad Bin Hezeem and Associates LLP ("BSA") in January 2014, a top tier regional legal practice in the DIFC, in Dubai in the Corporate and Commercial practice of the firm and was appointed as Head of Indirect Tax and Conveyancing (Real Estate) in January 2018, and being considered a UAE VAT specialist and receiving and appointment to act for the UAE Federal Tax Authority relating to VAT matters. John however still maintaining his role as a senior commercial and real estate lawyer for BSA. John returned to South Africa in April 2021 and established John Peacock and Associates Inc to assist his clients based in South Africa, the UAE, Europe, the USA and UK predominantly with matters pertaining to UAE law but to also provide services to existing South African clients establishing and expanding their footprints into the UAE, GCC as well as other foreign jurisdictions. 


​John is actively involved in legal work in the Middle East region and still represents numerous high net worth clients and businesses expanding their business into Africa and especially South Africa as well as South African franchisors, manufacturers and businesses expanding into the United Arab Emirates and the rest of the GCC region.

John served in the executive Board of The South African Business Council for Dubai and the Northern Emirates, as legal officer and vice president. The said council promotes the interests of South Africans in the United Arab Emirates and is a facilitator and promoter of South African businesses, both in Dubai and in South Africa, and a link with the South African Embassy and Consulate and the opportunities and local business in the region.

 

Apart from John's exploits in law, he is also an avid lawn bowler and social golfer where he spends his spare time.
